Introduction

Consumers today want it all, demanding fresh, high quality, sustainable products that will last at an affordable price. While resealable packaging won’t solve all of the consumer’s problems, it will help them keep their products fresher, for longer.

Resealable packaging is commonly used across the cosmetics, food and beverage, electronics, and consumer products industries. It enables consumers to have more freedom regarding the amount of time they have to use their products after opening.

The packaging features a method of closure that allows consumers to open and close products multiple times. These closure methods include zippers, screw caps, cross ties, re-sealable films, flaps, and more all used to maintain freshness.

Supermarket trends have shown an increase in consumers purchasing products with resealable packaging. This growth in demand has been fueled by the ease of use, convenience, and range of choice that resealable packaging offers consumers.

How consumers use resealable packaging

Consumers want to have products that are packaged professionally, maintain freshness, and are easy to open.

Packaging which is convenient, resealable, and clearly labelled makes consumers feel as if they have a premium product. In fact, with 61% of consumers saying they are more likely to rebuy a product if it came in premium packaging, resealable packaging can boost sales.

Often consumers are living busy lives and want to have products that they can dive into quickly after a long day. To keep them satisfied, manufacturers should ensure that the packaging is easy to open and close.

In order to make the resealable packaging functional for consumers, it can be beneficial for manufacturers to print opening and reclosing instructions onto the packaging. These need to be clear and straightforward as many consumers will not take the time to fully read these.

This feature must be seriously considered by the manufacturer. This is because if the consumer has a negative experience with the initial opening and closing procedure of the resealable packaging, they may not buy that product again.

Resealable packaging and consumer health

Since the Coronavirus outbreak, there has been an emphasis on trying to get the UK eating healthily to help fight off the virus. However, many consumers find this difficult to do when products are often cheaper when sold in larger quantities.

This is where resealable packaging for food products comes into its own. No longer do consumers have to choose between value and freshness with the packaging allowing them to open, use, and then reseal the products.

By being able to use as much of a product as they want and save the rest for later, consumers can control their portion sizes while limiting the effect healthy eating has on their bank balance.

It can also help customers stay healthy by limiting their exposure to harmful bacteria which can grow on improperly stored products. By providing a specifically designed opening and closing system, the products stay fresh and safe from contamination for longer.

However, consumers like and benefit from having a wide range of choices. As more consumers begin to favour resealable products, this will fuel demand for more products to make use of the packaging type.

Resealable packaging and the environment

Resealable packaging can limit the environmental impact of packaging in many ways. It can benefit both manufacturers and consumers alike while helping to reduce the overall amount of packaging reaching landfills.

For manufacturers wishing to reduce their packaging consumption, resealable products enable them to sell larger quantities of products in one package and therefore use less packaging materials.

Many consumers also want to limit their wastage and minimise their environmental impact. While purchasing resealable products enables consumers to buy larger quantities of products that use less packaging, it can also help reduce food waste.

Resealable packaging enables consumers to use and re-close their products, keeping them fresher for longer. This means consumers are much less likely to throw away spoiled products, reducing waste in areas such as food and cosmetics.
